Hey! Hi. I’m Jane. I’m a 23-year-old living in the Midwest and an early-career (obviously) journalist. Well, I mean, I do “digital content production” so I spend a lot of time at my job combing through inane comments on our Facebook page. Which can be a real treat.
I went to school for journalism and have always loved reading and writing — especially about weird cultural and technological developments. I obviously love Jia Tolentino, for her apt cultural analysis of digital-age life; Taylor Lorenz, for the bizarre things she investigates about the hellscape that is Tiktok; and Rest Of World, an international tech publication. I draw a lot of inspiration from those sources, and of course, many others. I’m also a new podcast listener (despite working in public radio for several years — I know, I should have my radio card revoked) and draw a lot of inspiration from pods like Binchtopia (listeningggg!), Maintenance Phase, and Behind the Bastards.
I thought I’d give just a little background on myself just so there’s some context to the things I choose to write about and what my perspective is. So here.
I was raised by English teachers so I was pretty much destined to like reading and writing (However I am incapable of doing long division).
According to my friends, I’m a notorious hater, but I think that’s because I’m a very intense lover, too. It’s all about balance.
I’ve never been on Tiktok but I substitute with Instagram reels so while I try to get on my high horse about my Tiktok-less lifestyle, I really can’t say shit. I’m also…still on Tumblr. Yeah, I know it’s 2022. Let me have this.
I have lots to say about indie music. I have a very intense love-hate relationship with social media. I tend to overshare. Haha. I edited this down a lot.
I hope you’ll follow along here. I’ve got lots of shit to say, particularly about both traditional and social media and the way they impact our lives. Going forward, you’ll find my analyses on things like: The “that girl” trend, Instagram wedding culture, online sobriety, why I hate the MCU, and plenty of insane things that will happen on the Internet that I can’t even fathom yet. Beyond hot(ish) takes, I hope to do some one-on-one interviews, as well as some in-depth dives into things that pique my curiosity, like the onset of child-tracking and/or dieting apps. Plus you’ll probably see some more personal musings about my life and experience with various forms of media.
Thanks for reading my little intro. I’ll be back with something real shortly.
